As February arrives, the first signs of spring emerge, but winter still holds its grip. This is a crucial month for ecological work, with key habitat management and survey opportunities before the breeding season begins. It’s also a great time to spot wildlife preparing for the months ahead.

Ecology Services Available This Month

With breeding season approaching, now is the time to complete essential habitat management and surveys, including:

  • Hedgerow and Tree Work: Last chance for coppicing, thinning, and pruning before nesting season starts.

  • Invasive Species Control: Ideal for tackling early growth of species like Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam.

  • Habitat Restoration & Pond Maintenance: Ensuring habitats are in good condition before spring activity increases.

  • Pre-Construction Ecology Surveys: To avoid delays, contact ecologists to schedule your habitat assessments, protected species surveys, and mitigation plans now.

  • Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW): On-site supervision to ensure construction and land management projects comply with environmental legislation.

If you have any specific needs for your land or project, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help.

Winter Wildlife to Watch

Nature is starting to stir, with more activity from birds and mammals as they prepare for the coming season. Keep an eye out for:

  • Overwintering Birds in Wetlands: Wigeons, teals, lapwings, and other waterfowl remain active in wetlands before migrating north.

  • Early Nesting Birds: Species like rooks and tawny owls are already preparing nests.

  • Hares: Their famous boxing displays are starting and will become more common as they enter breeding season.

  • Frogs, Toads and other amphibians: Milder days bring them out of hibernation as they head to ponds to spawn.

  • Foxes: Still highly active, with vixens preparing dens for the arrival of cubs.

Detection Dogs: Preparing for the season ahead

As we look ahead to the busy spring season, we're sorting out our licences for the next round of survey work. We're also preparing for our upcoming workshops at the Mammal Society Conference, where we'll showcase the important role our dogs play in ecological work. Exciting times ahead!
